“Do You Understand All These Things?”

Jesus asks His disciples if they understand. They reply yes. He asks us the same and how do we reply? I reply with a yes, a much more confident yes today than many years ago because by the grace of God, I come to know Jesus more fully each day.

What does Jesus ask us to understand in Matthew 13:47-53?

“The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

It is pretty clear that at the end of the age, if we are wicked we are going to hell and if we are righteous we will live with God in heaven for eternity. The real question arises, what is being wicked and what is being righteous. I think we can be easily deceived if we follow the teachings of the world versus the teachings of Jesus and His church. For me personally, I seek to know Holy Scripture and the teachings of Holy Church and they differ greatly from the many teachings of the world and relativism. In relativism, he has one truth, she has one truth and so on and one agrees to disagree. But in Jesus Christ, there is only one truth and Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

The beautiful thing about our Christian faith is that even if we continue to disagree over extremely important issues that will affect our salvation, we should continue to pray for each other to know God’s will and truth as we continue our journey in Christ. Amen.
