So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” (John 6:28-29)
From Miriam Webster’s Dictionary: Definition of Believe; To have a firm religious faith; To accept something as true, genuine or real; To have a firm conviction as to the goodness, efficacy, or ability of something.
Do I believe in one God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell, the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead? Do I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting?
The answer is I do believe.
Is that enough as Jesus says? It is and I qualify that by saying that since I believe, I am to follow all the teachings of Jesus through Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the teachings of the church.
It is truly not easy to believe but with confidence, I have the love and mercy of God to help me every step of the way. Jesus, I believe in you! Jesus, I trust in you! Amen.
