The Justice & Mercy Of God

I had choir rehearsal last night. Five of the six members of my group were available. We had dinner together and then before practice, we had a short prayer service for all involved in the Orlando tragedy and the evil perpetrated throughout the world.

In reading the Lord’s punishment God will inflict on Ahab, Jezebel and every male in Ahab’s line in 1 Kings 21:17-29, I am saddened with the Lord’s justice. I am so frustrated with killing. Our Heavenly Father loves us so much that he gives us the free will to choose to follow his Son Jesus or not to follow. When we choose to follow our Godless ways, bad things are going to happen and because of the freedom God gives us, he will permit the evil we cause and there will be grave consequences.

Do you think God was a little upset at Ahab and Jezebel for the plot to kill Naboth and then take his vineyard? Here is some of what God tells Ahab … “Because you have given yourself up to doing evil in the LORD’s sight, I am bringing evil upon you: I will destroy you and will cut off every male in Ahab’s line, whether slave or freeman, in Israel.” Already it sounds pretty bad but it gets worse … Against Jezebel, too, the LORD declared, “The dogs shall devour Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.” And the punishment continues … “When one of Ahab’s line dies in the city, dogs will devour him; When one of them dies in the field, the birds of the sky will devour him.”

Our God is a just God but he is also a merciful God. Ahab humbly repented in a way pleasing to God. God was merciful and said … “I will not bring the evil in his time. I will bring the evil upon his house during the reign of his son.” So there is a bit of a silver lining. There will still be future punishment but Ahab, because of God’s justice, came to realize the power of God and the evil he had done. Maybe all of the evil that God permits in our world today will bring many of us closer to each other in love of neighbor and hopefully with a sincere and humble act of repentance to love the Lord with all our hearts, souls, minds and strength. Our hope can only be in the Lord. He wins and evil loses.

The Justice & Mercy Of God

    1. I wish I had more wisdom also. It seems that God’s justice must be done in this case even though Ahab was forgiven. I guess I have to take the stand that God is God and I am not and believe that a greater glory always comes from his will whether fair or not in our eyes. Thanks Gloria and God bless you!
