P.U.S.H.

A widow continues to bother a dishonest judge to render a just decision against her adversary. Finally, the dishonest judge says While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.” This is the parable that Jesus tells in the Gospel from Luke 18:1-8.

Jesus tells us … “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Our priest’s homily tonight spoke about persistence in prayer. He used P.U.S.H. – Pray Until Something Happens. It seems clever and makes sense to me to pray always but it is so easy to fall into the trap thinking that our prayers are never answered or what difference will my prayer make in the big scheme of things.

As the United States of America nears another presidential election, our nation is in a mess. We as Christians cannot even agree on what is right or wrong. If I pray for this and you pray for that or I pray for him and you pray for her, does it even matter to God? My limited knowledge, understanding and wisdom says no on the surface but the question Jesus asked at the end of the Gospel tells me it does matter. When Jesus comes, will he find faith on earth? He will find faith in me. I trust Him and if He tells me to call out to Him day and night, then I better listen. Regardless what happens in this election or in the world, I will continue to pray and trust in the Lord.

  1. I have gotten into the habit of praying for God’s will to be accomplished, rather than for one candidate or the other. Then I pray that this nation will rally behind whoever is elected and that the church will come alive and bring revival to our land. No politician will ever do that!

  2. I’m with you, Mike. Back when I had my blog, I wrote “Shadrach, Meshach, and Whatshisname,” saying that, with them, I exclaim that my God can deliver me from hardships, torment, abuse, etc. and I do pray almost constantly that God do deliver me, BUT IF HE DOES NOT, I will continue to be faithful to my God, worshiping Him alone. My obedience to Him is not conditional upon how my prayers are answered. So, Mike, you and I can stand firm together. As far as the election is concerned, it is small potatoes in light of God’s will for His creation. Either candidate is capable of adding to the mess on earth…or not. God’s will be done, regardless; He ain’t counting on the election to get things done…He’s counting on you and me. Cheers.
